Remember 2015

You may be wondering why I'm doing a Remembrance day themed post - the reason is since I only post every 2nd week November 11th Remembrance Day here in Canada would come before my next post and I didn't want to miss this post going up. 

I want to share a story about what made me so aware of the wars as neither of my grandfathers were able to serve.  It was the mid 1970's, I would have been 7 or 8 and my dad went into the hospital to have knee surgery.  My mom would take us in the evenings to visit him.  We would enter the hospital and there were some gentlemen always there that we would stop to visit with before heading up to see my dad.

It would be quite a few years later before it hit me who these gentlemen were and I checked with my mother to see if I was right.  She confirmed for me that the gentlemen in the wheelchairs with missing limbs we used to visit with were war veteran's and sadly they didn't get that many visitors and because of their wounds they lived at the hospital.

Sadly I can no longer see their faces in my memories but every so often and on Remembrance Day that memory does return.   

It's hard to believe what so many have given for others to live in freedom and peace.

Veteran's Affairs put this poster out this year for the anniversary of the poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae so I thought I would share.

The middle picture above is the cover of the Star weekly Magazine from Toronto October 28th, 1944 that my husband found for me at a flea market.  The other pictures are the WRENS which stood for the Women Royal Naval Service.

The pictures above are of World War 2 and also from the same Star Weekly magazine.

King George the Fifth was King of England during World War I, the picture is from The Sphere Magazine cover from January 25, 1936, the next picture at the top is Wanda the Welder, then Ration books from World War 2, The Life Magazine cover has Winston Churchill on the cover from May 21st, 1945, and a knitting pattern book for service woollies. 

I found his pin at the flea market a few years back and usually wear it on one of my hats.

A couple of weeks back my husband found me this 50th Anniversary Mug of VE Day.

I found this figurine of Rosie The Riveter a couple of years ago at a second hand store.

Yet again these pictures come from the family albums but I do not know who the people in them are.

I found this Barbie doll in a Mountie's uniform a couple of weeks ago at my favorite second hand store.

My Finds / His Finds For Me

I've had few chances to hit the second hand stores these past couple of weeks and have found a few things.  So it's nice to finally have the chance to check out my favorite stores.  The Christmas stuff is making it's way onto the shelves which always makes the search that much more fun.

A couple of weeks ago was my first anniversary and I told my husband no gifts the reason for this decision was because he's hard to buy gifts for.  But he bought me the lovely white roses I posted a picture of in my last post.  We went to a antique show on the day of our anniversary it was a last minute decision.  I saw this lovely small Royal Doulton Flambe Veined Vase 1605 Made In England which I really wanted.  I had a small problem I was out of money my friend's husband happened to be talking to me at the time so I had him find my husband and point it out to him.  We now have a new lovely vase added to our collection in the living room.  Okay yes I ended up with a gift and a lovely one too.

The picture of the tree does not look as lovely as the tree does which I see when I look out the window at work.  The orange frosted glasses were a nice find the holder I already had.  The two pictures with the pumpkins and harvest scenes I took down the road at Lepp Farm Market where we buy our vegetables.  The orange metal candle holder I found this past week.  The dishes are part of my good dish sets which are made by Grindley in England.

This was my first attempt at doing a Steampunk window display it turned out okay for a first attempt I think people  really liked it.  I plan to add to it in the next couple of years. 

His Finds For Me

The Westclox alarm clock which is the first in my collection on a stand, the Pyrex dish in the Designs pattern and small cane paperweight were the husbands finds this past week which he got for me.

Yes I am a lucky girl.

This paperweight is unsigned it reminds me of seaweed.

This looks like a summer picture I recently found this vintage tablecloth and wanted to share it.

Fall 2015 Is Here

It's so nice to finally have Fall here cooler weather has arrived with it.  It's nice seeing the trees change. I know people who don't care for fall as they see it as nature dying around them but I see it as a beautiful color display.

This picture was taken through my kitchen window on a beautiful October day here in British Columbia.

These beautiful white roses are from my wonderful husband for our first anniversary.  He spent quite a lot of time on the phone trying to find a florist who had white roses my favorite.   He was giving up hope but had left his phone number with the florists and one did phone back and said she could get them in time for our anniversary and the above picture is the result.  I love them. They move around with me to different rooms so my husband's stupid cat doesn't eat them.

A Walk In The Rain In The Garden

Well we are finally getting a fair bit of rain here in the Fraser Valley in British Columbia and believe me I`m not complaining.  It`s nice not to have to water everything.  This past week I`ve been tired but I`ve just gone from one shift at work to a totally different one so I`m guessing it has something to do with it.  I managed to hit a couple of second hand stores yesterday but didn`t find that many items.

I took the picture of the church above a few years back it`s located a few miles down the road from the house I grew up in.  It kind of fit my mood today so I thought I would put it in this post.

    A Walk In The Rain Around The Yard

Yesterday I took a walk around the yard and snapped these pictures of things growing there. 

This mug is Watcombe Devon Motto Ware England.

My grandparents had a plate in this pattern on the wall in their cabin.

The mug reminds me in a way of something Clarice Cliff would have done and since finding pieces by her are hard to come by here in British Columbia  I thought I would get it when I saw it even if it isn`t by her.

I recently came by these books by Mark Twain at the same time in my favorite second hand store I wonder if it was someone`s collection or just ended up there at the same time by chance.

I of course know the story of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn but have never heard of Tom Sawyer Abroad.

The last book with a picture of Mark Twain is ``A Treasury Of Mark Twain The Greatest Humor of the Greatest American Humorist.

These Allies are part of my glass collection it`s always nice to find them in bags of marbles I pick up at the second hand stores.

A Look Back In Time

The best finds for me are when I find things that I remember from my past, it can be something I had or something that I remember someone else had that I liked.  It's like music, though I enjoy all types and different era's I can safely say the 50's, 60's and 70's are my all time favorite era's.  So in this post I'm taking a small walk back into my past.

Like many people my mother had Pyrex dishes when I was growing up, though the above baking dishes I recently found in the picture above were not them. She had the Early American pattern.

My uncle gave my sister and I our copies of Dr. Seuss books I still have our copies but they are not the above ones since ours are in pretty rough shape.  When I see Dr. Seuss toys, if not too over priced, I pick them up. The Cat In The Hat, Thing 1 and Thing 2 totally take me back to bed time stories when I was little.  Still today once in awhile I manage to work in Sam-I-Am into a conversation from Green Eggs And Ham.

Star Trek, I watched the series in reruns when I was little and also watched it as a cartoon.  My favorite episode had the crew go to a planet and whatever they thought about would happen.  The above picture has a game box and a few trading cards I found in a mixed package of cards.

The Partridge Family of course, I watched it, what kid in the 70's didn't.  I had a Partridge Family coloring book at my grandparents cabin which when I had to go fishing with someone I took with me and colored, I had no interest in fishing.

I wouldn't want to catch anything, they would have wanted me to eat it. To this day I don't like fish.  The records I found a few months ago.  I must admit I've had the CD for a long time and once in awhile I will throw it on. Come On Get Happy, the theme song from the show brings back good memories.  It is one of my CD's I can honestly say that my husband leaves alone. I never have to search the vehicles for it.

If you follow my blog at all you know I have a thing about glass. I think this may have started with Marbles.  I can remember at my grandparents place I would dump the bag of marbles out and pick my favorites.  So I thought I would share some I have that are pictured above. 

More recently I have been collecting things with the Keep Calm sayings, I found the above teapot on Saturday, the tea strainer I've had for a few months and the Grindley cup and saucer are part of my good dishes.  The Queen and Prince seem the right fit for the picture.

And yet another paperweight from my collection.

I do not know the maker at this point.

A Week Off & A Road Trip

A lot has happened this past week on Saturday we had a new addition to the family arrive.  My cousin and his wife had a baby boy who I can't wait to go visit since it's been many years since we've had a baby to fuss over.  They decided to wait till the baby was born to find out the sex which I totally supported, I've been looking at some baby stuff now we can shop.

My Finds 

The above items are some of my finds in the last few weeks,  The Beatle's lunch kit is a reproduction which I'm sure is the only way I could have afforded it.  The orange pattern vase is made by Poole in England it's the second one I have the first one was a gift from a friend so she started this collection.  The green mugs are also made in England by Biltons.

                                                 

His Finds For Me

My husband found these Fire King mugs for me at the flea market last week. 

Some times he has some great finds it's very rare he has a total miss.

He hit it out of the park with this find.

So this past week I had the week off but the husband only got Tuesday off  so I ended up doing things on my own.  The above pictures are from a new local store here in Abbotsford I love to visit.  All the sellers have great items and ideas as you can see in the above pictures.  If you are ever in Abbotsford I encourage you to visit The Market  and other stores on Montrose  Avenue.

On the one day my husband had off we hit the road and did a road trip within an hour and a half of home the pictures above are from this road trip.  We started off in Chilliwack stopping in at the second hand stores.  Then we went to  Harrison, British Columbia for an ice cream cone and sat on a bench taking in the views.  Our next stop was at the Kilby historic site.  We also stopped in at the Kenmode Wild Berry Wines in Dewdney, British Columbia so I could pick up two bottles of the apple wine they make that I like.

Our last stop before heading home was at the Westminster Abbey In Mission, British Columbia which houses a community of Benedictine monks.

The Abbey was built in 1939 it's official name is the Abbey of Saint Joseph of Westminster.

These pictures are from the husband 's family albums and just made me think of summer.

In The Garden and Finds

 This past week has been weird around my place I have not had time to hit any stores though I saw a new store I can't wait to check out but won't be able to do so till next Friday.  Hopefully I will be able to tell you about it on my next post.  On Saturday I had most of my family over for dinner it was a good time which always makes all the work involved worth it.

I'm only sharing one of my new paperweights today.  This one is by Selkirk made in Scotland it's a limited edition 229/450.

I took a walk around the yard this week and snapped  the pictures of my flowers above. 

My husband and I both liked the covered stoneware dish above we can't make out the makers name but it was made in Japan.  A friend of mine believes the vase the flowers are in is End Of The Day Glass the vase I inherited from my husbands mother once we got together.

I found the large amber jar a couple of weeks ago and I went downstairs and dug the smaller one out of a box I had it stored in I found the smaller one quite awhile back.

These mugs look like Fire King but have no marks I haven't had time to figure out who the maker is yet.

I like the colors and the design on them so when I saw them I knew they needed to come home with me.

You may be wondering why I have a picture of the Good Year blimp in this post but it's because on Friday August 07th to the 9th 2015 was the Abbotsford Airshow.  I have watched planes fly over the different homes I've lived in for decades but have never attended the airshow I would like to but I don't like crowds much and it's very crowded plus I burn so easy so I have not attempted it.  My dad's cousin took this picture as you can see it had quite a audience as it hovered over a farmers field there's another picture that shows cars way down the road stopped.
